Africa FX Update

5 October 2026

The naira’s official-versus-parallel spread remains the key West African FX watch as the rand softens and Egypt’s pound stays under pressure.

Nigeria’s parallel market remains the day’s standout divergence. AMB calculates a consensus benchmark only when at least two reasonably current independent observations are available, and discloses material source dispersion instead of smoothing it away.

The rand is trading softer on the day, while Egypt’s pound remains closely watched. Ghana and Kenya continue to provide relatively stable official benchmarks for West and East Africa.

AMB WATCH~2.9%

Nigeria parallel-market premium — roughly ₦38/$ above the official reference.

AMB TAKE

The naira spread is still contained versus earlier periods, but the persistence of a parallel premium keeps liquidity and price-discovery risk in focus.
